Selection Criteria and Panel Interviews

Selection Criteria

When applying for government permanent positions, candidates are required to address “Selection Criteria”. These are generally 5 or 6 points that must be addressed and allow you to demonstrate your capabilities and suitability for a position. These must be written prior to any interviews and submitted with your resume. They are, in many ways more important than your resume as they are used as the first reference point. Approximately one half to one page for each criteria should allow you to adequately demonstrate your knowledge and skills. You should use specific, practical examples of prior experience and responsibilities. This will allow you to clearly demonstrate that you understand the requirements and are able to fulfil them. General statements should be used sparingly. When preparing your selection criteria, it may be useful to list your achievements and strengths and ensure that they are all incorporated into your selection criteria responses.

The requirements differ depending on the position for which you are applying but generally focus on technical experience, systems knowledge and supervisory experience (if applicable). As noted, it is extremely important to give specific examples of instances in your work history where you have had the relevant experience or fulfilled the criteria. If you have not had specific experience (eg knowledge of government accounting standards), you should still answer the question by relating any practical experience that you may have had that would allow you to easily gain the required expertise.

Panel Interviews

If an interview is secured, the selection criteria will generally be used as a basis for interview questions. You should therefore be prepared to elaborate on or clarify points made within the selection criteria. The interview will be conducted by a “panel” of three staff from your area of speciality and/or Human Resources. Each panel member may take turns at questioning, alternatively one or two members will question whilst the other takes notes and observes your reactions and general demeanour.
